Experience:

Graeme is a founding member of MACTODD and recognised as one of New Zealand’s most experienced resource management lawyers after a legal career spanning 30 years. Graeme is also a Notary Public. He graduated from the University of Otago in 1981 and immediately joined Alan Macalister in his Queenstown practice as a sole staff solicitor, becoming a partner 18 months later.

Today Graeme heads MACTODD’s Resource Management Law Team, along with partner Jayne Macdonald, and acts for both local authorities and private clients throughout New Zealand. He is currently solicitor to the Queenstown Lakes District Council and Central Otago District Council and has extensive experience in a diverse range of local government and resource management law. He regularly appears for the councils and private clients before the Environment and High Courts, has also appeared before the Court of Appeal and has been involved in most significant zoning and development decisions in the Queenstown Lakes District since the 1980s.

Graeme is also widely respected as a specialist in tourism industry related work including the purchase, sale, planning and development of tourism infrastructure assets such as skifields, rural visitor zones, international golf courses, hotels and other visitor accommodation and premium commercial projects. He has been a legal adviser to developers of residential and rural residential subdivisions, new urban areas and extensions to urban boundaries.

He has acted for a number of overseas based clients, predominantly from South East and Northern Asia, assisting and advising them on their New Zealand investments often being appointed to the role of owner’s representative. In this capacity he has frequently travelled overseas and he has participated in and presented addresses at Investment in New Zealand road shows organised by the New Zealand Government in South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia.

Graeme was a member of a Rotary Foundation Group Study Exchange to Nigeria in 1987 and as a student was an AFS scholar. He is a keen traveller and follower of sport, and an enthusiastic golfer.
